Bishop Bay Hot Springs, BC
As
we entered Bishop Bay, we were greeted by a pod of small porpoises dancing
around our boat and two eagles soaring overhead. Not a boat in sight to
disturb the tranquility of this idyllic place. Anchoring proved a bit
challenging: first finding a place that was shallow enough and second that
was a mud bottom and not rock. Once secure, we shuttled ashore to a 50
foot wood dock and ramp up to the welcome sign. The path to the left led
to the campground which consisted of three well-maintained wooden tent platforms
in the rainforest just off the shoreline. It was a place we would have
loved to camp! The path to the right led to the hot springs.
Just
a short wood planked walkway brought us to a cement hut which provided shelter
from rain and a changing area. We were pleasantly surprised at the
cleanliness of the water and the place in general. The water was the
perfect temperature and did not smell of sulfur at all. The tub was all
natural rock, although the water was piped in. Hanging from the ceiling
over the water, people had hung various buoys and floats which Bear used as a
playground. Every where one could write, graffiti marked hundreds of
cruisers who'd been there before us. We enjoyed a leisurely soak as a
short-lived rain shower poured down around us. As we emerged hot and
pruney, the sun blessed us with its bright rays - something we've rarely seen on
this trip! Only as we motored back to Oso Blanco
did another boat dare venture into the bay. We had a spectacular time and
would recommend this as a "must stop" when cruising the Inside Passage.
